The Huddersfield Ring Road is set to get a major facelift this summer

Work to improve the Huddersfield Ring Road will start this summer with a £750,000 investment in the Queensgate and Shorehead section of the motorway.

The improvements we make

From Monday 24th June, Kirklees Council will be carrying out extensive works including resurfacing the carriageway and roundabout, laying a new curb, improving the central reservation and upgrading the traffic signals and pedestrian crossing, which will include tactile paving.

The work is expected to take around two months to complete and is being delivered ahead of development work due to take place as part of the Our Cultural Heart scheme.

David Shepherd, Strategic Director for Growth and Regeneration said:

“We are dedicated to improving the motorways in Kirklees. The Huddersfield Ring Road is a vital gateway to Huddersfield town center and by investing in these works we are creating better access to the town centre’s shops, cafes, restaurants, bars and local businesses. The difference will be significant and I would like to thank people in advance for their patience while this important work is carried out.”

Variable road closures and limited weekend disruption

To allow work to proceed safely and efficiently, the project requires some full road closures for a period of 24 hours. This will be limited from Monday to Thursday from 8am to midnight and from 4.30pm to midnight on Sundays. No work will be carried out in support of the local leisure industry on Friday or Saturday.

Any noisy operational work should be completed by midnight. If the project experiences delays, residents and businesses in the area will be notified in advance.

Digital Variable Messaging (VMS) signs will be installed prior to the start of work, displaying important information. Signed diversion routes will be established for traffic.

Diversions instead

During the works, traffic management will vary depending on diversion routes in place to support the work phases. Work begins on the Shorehead roundabout, there will be two diversion routes. First via Castlegate, Chapel Hill and Firth Street to Wakefield Road and second via Wakefield Road, St Andrew’s Road, Gasworks Street, A62 Leeds Road, Southgate and Castlegate. As work continues at Queensgate, motorists will be diverted onto the A62 Castlegate, Unna Way and Southgate.
