Leeds United are still in with a chance of signing an £11m Premier League player this summer

Leeds United are still within shouting distance of completing a deal for one of their top summer targets despite growing competition.

After failing to win promotion, Leeds will unfortunately find themselves in a similar situation to 12 months ago, battling with lower Premier League clubs for their goals.

Leeds were snapped up for a host of players, including Gustavo Hamer and Cameron Archer, last summer by the likes of Sheffield United simply because of the lure of Premier League football and finances.

The Blades ended up being relegated with a whimper last season, but unfortunately the reality is that the players would rather test themselves at the top than drop down to the Championship.

Leeds have spent much of the last 10 months battling Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton for promotion and could be in the transfer market again this time.

Transfer pundits promise Joe Rodon upgrade to Leeds

LeedsUnited.News spoke exclusively to transfer pundit Graeme Bailey this week, with the window officially opening last Friday.

He shared an update on the possibility of both Max Wober and Rasmus Kristensen returning, though it’s the pursuit that Joe Rodon supporters are more concerned about right now.

Leeds remain determined to bring their former loanee back to Elland Road this summer but will face competition from the likes of Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton.

However, Bailey says Leeds certainly cannot be ruled out of the race at this point and much could depend on the £11m man’s wishes.

He said: “Spurs do it about the other clubs. On loan at Leeds, he wouldn’t have lost a penny. Will he get the Spurs contract at Leicester, Ipswich or Southampton? Possibly.

“But I wouldn’t rule out Leeds at the moment, but obviously Spurs would prefer to sell. Are Leeds in a position to buy him permanently? He could, but it’s a risk if he doesn’t go up, then Rodon should take a shot.

“It will come down to the player. I think it will be tough for Leeds, given that the other three can offer first-team football in the Premier League. It will be a tough sell for Leeds but I wouldn’t rule them out completely.”

Potential new Leicester boss Steve Cooper keen on Rodon

As mentioned, Leicester are one of the parties interested in Rodon this summer and the appointment of Cooper could be bad news.

Cooper is a Welsh compatriot of Rodon and also worked alongside him for a season during their time together at Swansea City.

Cooper is understood to be keen to get Rodon to sign for the Foxes for the first time if, as expected, he lands the manager’s job at the King Power.

As Bailey mentioned, though, this saga will largely depend on what Rodon wants to do.
