Northern Lights bathe Coventry in spectacular color – in pictures

Locals raced into their gardens to watch the Northern Lights bathe Coventry and Warwick in incredible colors last night. The rare spectacle blanketed the sky in our area in a kaleidoscope of green, blue, purple and pink.

Residents who took to social media with their images left many stunned. Some were so amazed that they could see the impressive Aurora Borealis, usually only visible from the northern parts of the British Isles, from their back gardens.

The lights were said to be visible as part of the largest geometric storm in almost 20 years. The Aurora Borealis display occurs when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere around the magnetic poles.

But the spectacular light show wasn’t just seen in our area, it was seen across the UK and around the world. Those who missed it last night might get a chance to see the lights again tonight.

The Met Office said tonight there could be a repeat of the conditions that allowed the northern lights to appear last night.

The exact locations have yet to be revealed, but they have been seen since 11pm last night. The latest local Met Office forecasts for our area predict clear skies this evening after another warm day.

Temperatures could reach 24 degrees Celsius today, but tomorrow (May 12) could lead to “heavy showers” in the afternoon.
