Alectra reports a “significant” increase in electricity consumption during the heat wave

“Peak demand on our system increases daily due to the cumulative effect of sustained high temperatures that persist overnight,” says the senior vice president.

As an extended heat wave grips much of Ontario, Alectra Utilities is advising its local customers to be mindful of their energy usage to manage their summer energy bills.

“Peak demand on our system is increasing daily due to the cumulative effect of sustained high temperatures that persist overnight,” Chris Hudson, senior vice president of network operations at Alectra, said in a news release.

“These conditions lead to higher demand for electricity, particularly in the late afternoons when temperatures are at their highest,” Hudson added.

The heat has led to a significant increase in electricity consumption as air conditioners and cooling systems work overtime, according to Alectra.

On Tuesday, Alectra said the load on its system had reached more than 5,000 megawatts (MW).

The company said power consumption is expected to increase today (June 19) and as the week progresses, likely surpassing last year’s peak of 5,247 MW. (One MW equals one million watts.)

“As extremely hot weather becomes more frequent, it is vital that we continue to invest in renewing old equipment and installing new infrastructure to meet the growing demand on the grid,” the company said.

Alectra, which serves 17 communities in Southern Ontario, including Bradford West Gwillimbury, is reminding everyone of these conservation tips to help reduce electricity consumption and summer hydro bills:

  • Use a programmable thermostat to regulate the temperature
  • Use ceiling and portable fans to circulate the air
  • If possible, hang clothes outside instead of using a dryer
  • Use curtains or blinds to shade the windows on hot, sunny days
  • If you use an air conditioner, keep the doors and windows closed. This is especially important for small retail shops and restaurants with street-level entrances.
