Home Secretary James Cleverly is knocking on doors in Nuneaton and this is what the locals told him

It’s not every day the Home Secretary knocks on your door – but that’s what happened to the residents of one Nuneaton street. James Cleverly, who is responsible for the safety of the nation, called in the city yesterday afternoon, June 19.

It was something of a homecoming for the minister, who revealed to CoventryLive that his grandmother was born and bred in Nuneaton. She lived in the town before meeting her grandfather and moving to Wiltshire in the 1930s.

After returning for a fundraiser, it was his first time back in the city where his family’s roots lie. Spotted alongside Tory candidate Marcus Jones door knocking and canvassing in Hayle Close before joining Coventry Live outside the Acorn pub for a quick catch up.

He spoke of the reception he received as he knocked on the doors of locals in the quiet residential neighborhood. “It was a good response,” he said. “There were a lot of smiles, a lot of recognition for Marcus which was nice to see and a lot of people saying ‘oh hello Mr Jones’ which is quite traditional really.”

He added: “It was good, one of the things that really struck me is that people ‘get it’, they understand what’s at stake and that the last few years have been tough because of Covid and the war in Ukraine.

“They’re not always happy about everything, but it’s also very, very, very clear that they haven’t been won by the Labor Party, that really struck me. Hand on heart people say ‘you must do something, the cost of living has been difficult’ and just as you are about to explain what the plans are, often completely unprompted, people will then say ‘But we can’t have a Labor Government, I don’t want those taxes, they destroyed the economy last time.” So I think I understand what’s at stake and it really shows.
