Nuneaton will lose a fire engine as there is no U-turn in the service proposals

Nuneaton WILL lose one of its essential fire engines as no U-turn was included in revised service proposals. According to Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service’s initial proposals, Nuneaton Fire Station, which is the county’s busiest, has lost one of its two engines.

The second engine would be sent to Bedworth Fire Station, which would no longer be a ‘watch station’ and would instead have a manned crew during the day. But the move would leave Nuneaton and Bedworth with just one engine to cover the whole borough at night.

The fire service held a public consultation on all its ‘Resources at Risk’ proposals across the county and led to more than 1,300 responses. As a result, some changes were made to the plans, but crucially not Nuneaton.

This comes despite fears raised not only by residents, but also by the firefighters’ union, who said they were “flabbergasted” by the plans. CoventryLive has contacted Warwickshire County Council, which is responsible for the fire service, about the decision not to change the plans for Nuneaton station.

In a comment, a spokesman said: “The proposed model is designed to align resources to the levels of activity and risk in the county. Proposed model improves response times to life and property incidents in Nuneaton and Bedworth”.

The revised plans will go to the county council’s resources and fire and rescue review and control meeting for debate on Wednesday 26 June. Their recommendations will then be made to the cabinet, which is due to meet on Tuesday 16 July.
