Hot dog stand plan for former bus station confectionery which played ‘crucial role in community’

Applicant Robert Kraus submitted the proposal for Wardley News, based in Bradford Place, near the Cenotaph in Walsall, which previously sold newspapers, cold drinks and sweets.

If approved, the kiosk will be known as Busway Bites and promises to sell “high quality” French hot dogs, muffins and coffee.

Walsall Council’s planning officers are expected to make a decision on the proposal for the kiosk, which applicants said was closed earlier this year in August.

In a heritage statement, the applicants said: “Wardley News has been an integral part of Walsall bus station for many years, providing newspapers, magazines and confectionery to travelers and locals alike.

“The kiosk has been a constant presence, witnessing the evolution of Walsall and adapting to the changing needs of its patrons.

“Its strategic location at the bus station is particularly significant as this area has been a central hub of activity and transport in Walsall.

“Wardley News has contributed to the vibrancy and functionality of the bus station, making it a trusted stop for commuters and daily visitors.

“The Wardley News has played a crucial role in the community beyond its primary newspaper function.

“It served as a social meeting point, a place where people could interact, share a moment and stay informed. This small but significant establishment fostered a sense of community and belonging among its patrons.

“The kiosk’s contribution to local culture was its ability to provide a welcoming and accessible environment, offering comfort and convenience to all who passed through the bus station.

“The decision to retain the site at Walsall Bus Station underlines the importance of continuity and heritage.

“The bus station itself is a historic landmark, an integral part of the city’s everyday life and its transport network.

“By remaining on this site, Busway Bites ensures that it maintains its historical connection to the community.

“This continuity is critical to preserving the kiosk’s role as a common touchstone and maintaining its historic significance.”
