The world’s last paddle steamer sets course for Cornwall.

Waverley is due to visit Penzance, Falmouth, Fowey, Plymouth and Dartmouth for her first visit to the area since the late 90s and her first visit to Fowey between August 28 and September 2.

The historic steamer will dock in Plymouth and offer an evening cruise as part of the Cattewatter 150 celebrations on Friday 29 August.

Captain Richard Allan, Harbor Master and CEO, Cattewater Harbor Commissioners, said: “Following a successful trial last October, we are delighted that PS Waverley will return to Plymouth in August and be part of the port’s anniversary year our and Cattewater special celebrations 150. .

“This iconic vessel will be moored at the Barbican Pier during her visit, allowing her passengers easy access on and off as they enjoy cruising Plymouth Sound, the Tamar and the wider South Devon coastline.”

The highlight of Waverley’s visit will be meeting the last steam powered steamer, Kingswear Castle, on the River Dart on the afternoon of Saturday 31st August.

Paul Semple, Waverley’s managing director, describes the visit as the highlight of his 2024 sailing season.

Paul said: “We are delighted to bring Waverley to meet Kingswear Castle for the first time on the Dart. With Kingswear Castle celebrating its centenary this year, it’s fantastic to be able to bring together the UK’s only two operational steamships on the River Dart for the first time.

“I am sure that the meeting of these two wonderful steamers will capture the imagination of the public and will be an event not to be missed by locals and indeed enthusiasts across the UK, it is sure to be the highlight of the 2024 sailing season of Waverley.

“I hope many in Cornwall and Devon will get on board and experience Waverley as a living and working heritage attraction that is of national and international importance.”

This year Waverley holds the prestigious status of being crowned National Flagship by National Historic Ships UK. The award recognizes the breadth and geographical reach of Waverley’s racing, in addition to the extensive sailing program planned for 2024, which includes her visit to the South West.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of Waverley being gifted with £1 to the Steamship Preservation Society to preserve her for future generations.

Since 1975, the ship has been operated on a non-profit basis to ensure its continued survival.

The ship features open promenade decks, a self-service dining saloon, period lounges, a gift shop and an open engine room.

Passengers aboard the Waverley can watch the engineers at work as they operate the impressive triple expansion steam engine and see the ship’s paddle wheels.
