Who will be my MP in… Mitcham and Morden?

Millions of voters in London will go to the polls on July 4 to elect a new government. The Standard looks at the key battleground and other places in the capital and has published an interactive map. Here we turn on the spotlight:

MITCHAM AND MORDEN

Candidates for the main parties (in alphabetical order):

Ellie Cox – Tories

Jennifer Ann Gould – Liberal Democrat

Pippa Maslin – Green Party

Ruth Price – Reform UK

summary:

Created in 1974, the constituency was first represented by Bruce Douglas-Mann as a Labor MP.

But he defected to the Social Democratic Party in 1982, triggered a by-election to win a new term, but lost to Tory Angela Rumbold.

He held the seat until 1997.

It was then won by Labour’s Siobhain McDonagh, now a lady.

It has a sizeable majority of 16,482 in the 2019 election.

Area: Wards in the constituency include Cannon Hill, Colliers Wood, Cricket Green, Figge’s Marsh, Graveney, Lavender Fields, Longthornton, Lower Morden, Pollards Hill, Ravensbury and St Helier.

Impact of boundary changes (Thrasher and Rallings analysis): Boundary changes have made it a marginally less safe Labor seat. The party won it in 2019 with 61.1% of the vote, the Conservatives with 25.1% and the Lib Dems with 8.1%. Under the new boundaries it would have been 57.5% Labour, 26.7% Conservative and 10.8% Lib Dem.
