“Don’t put this down the drain over the summer – it could cost you £185”

As summer approaches and people head to the coast, an expert warns that rinsing sand from the bathroom can significantly damage your drains. David Rees, plumbing expert at HomeSupply, explains that sand can build up and create blockages in pipes, despite the fact that the sand itself does not cause any damage.

He said, “Because sand can be heavy, it will collect in the U-bend of your pipes. Over time, enough sand can build up in the drain trap and prevent it from draining properly.

“Older homes that have cast iron or galvanized steel pipes are more at risk because of the rough inner surface of the pipes. These pipes can corrode over time and sand will get trapped in these areas, leading to narrowing and clogging. Even newer homes with PVC pipes are not immune to blockages if proper precautions are not taken.”

David urged homeowners to take preventative measures against sand clogging drains: “Ideally you should remove any sand objects before bringing them into the house as this will minimize the amount entering the system sanitary of your house. If you need to remove sand from your sink, I recommend installing filters over the drains so they catch any debris before it has a chance to build up and create a clog.”

If homeowners suspect their drains are already clogged with sand, David suggests trying the following methods:

Use a plunger

Remove the drain plug or cover, then place a sink plunger over the drain. Pump this up and down to create suction as this will loosen the sand so it can flow down the drain.

Use a drain snake or wire hanger
