Former Coventry City favorite for huge ‘six-year’ deal at Midland rivals

Former Coventry City favorite Ian Maatsen is heading to Midlands rivals Aston Villa on a stunning six-year deal!

The 22-year-old Dutch defender, who is currently on international duty with Holland at the Euros, is claimed to be heading to Villa Park after the Premier League club “reached an agreement” with Chelsea.

Athletic claim the two clubs have agreed a fee above the £35m release clause that was available to Borussia Dortmund – where Maatsen spent last season on loan, including playing in the Champions League final – earlier this summer. However, after that specific clause expired, Villa stepped in and agreed to a deal, reports said.

The attacking-minded defender – who spent an impressive season on loan with the Sky Blues during the 2021/22 campaign – is said to have his personal terms on a six-year deal, which Villa will now work to complete. Unai Emery is a big fan of the left-back and paid close attention to the full-back’s impressive performances at Dortmund last season.

Maatsen spent the second half of the campaign with the Bundesliga outfit after struggling for game time at Chelsea.

Maatsen’s contract at Chelsea was set to expire in June 2025 but was extended by 12 months in January before he joined Dortmund on loan.
