Full list of tower blocks in Birmingham where the CCTV pilot could be introduced

New CCTV cameras could soon be introduced at a number of tower blocks in Birmingham as part of a pilot project. The city council has pledged to explore how CCTV could be reintroduced in high-rise and low-rise council blocks and boroughs.

It therefore proposes to implement a 12-month CCTV pilot in certain ‘hotspots’, where a particular block or property suffers from significant crime and anti-social behavior (ASB). A number of these areas, according to the council’s recently published report, face ASB, such as criminal damage, fire and drug use.

The council’s decision to previously decommission all CCTV around a decade ago was based on financial pressures at the time. The report said: “This decision was partly informed by the potential increase in service charges required to fund the CCTV upgrade, at a time when the move to Universal Credit meant many tenants were struggling to budget their income to meet . costs.”

Birmingham City Council’s cabinet will consider proposals for the CCTV pilot, which have been recommended for approval, next week. The priority hotspot blocks, according to the report, are as follows:

Bakeman House – South Yardley

Barrow House – North Edgbaston

Brookpiece House – Heath and Monyhull Druids
