Two other men, believed to be connected to the event, were taken into custody on Frog Lane on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon. GMP confirmed two knives were seized and all three people are still in custody this morning (Friday).

Inspector Sam Davies from GMP’s Wigan district commented: “This was a truly frightening incident for the public, with local shops taking the decision to close for their own safety. Fortunately, no members of the public were injured and I’m pleased to say that all our officers are safe,” reports the Manchester Evening News.

“They put themselves in harm’s way without hesitation and through their brave actions, all the individuals we believe were involved were swiftly arrested. I would also like to thank a member of the public who tried to assist an officer in apprehending a suspect at Wigan bus station, if they read this I would urge them to get in touch so I can thank them personally for their actions.

“Additional officers remain in the area to provide reassurance to the public. If you have any concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to chat with them; they are there to help you.”
