Tragedy as two die in crash on A1 in Northumberland

Police have issued an appeal after two people died in a crash on the A1 in Northumberland.

Just after 3pm on Friday, Northumbria Police received a report of a two-vehicle collision involving a Citroen C3 Picasso and a VW Transport north of Haggerston. It is understood the Citroen was traveling northbound when, for reasons yet to be determined, it collided with the southbound VW.

Emergency services attended the scene, but the 68-year-old driver of the Citroen and a 26-year-old female passenger in the VW both died in the crash. Their next of kin have both been informed and are being supported by specially trained police officers.

Another man and a woman, both occupants of the VW, were taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. An investigation has been opened to establish all the circumstances in which the collision occurred.

The road remained closed between the B6525 near Scremerston and the B6353 near Fenwick for several hours with various diversions, but has since reopened. Officers are appealing for any witnesses or anyone traveling in that area of the A1 who has dashcam footage that could help with their inquiries to get in touch.

Northumbria Police encouraged anyone with information to contact officers via the report page on their website or by calling 101 quoting reference NP-20240531-0645.
