A high school hockey classic has once again provided a major helping hand to a food bank in Cornwall.

Bishop Cup organizers, participating school principals Joy Martel (St. Joseph’s Panthers) and Nancy McIntyre (Holy Trinity Falcons), player representatives and others gathered June 6 to present a check for just over $2,500 to the president of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul of Cornwall Sue MacDonald.

MacDonald thanked everyone involved and said community support is vital, especially in difficult times.

“We’ve had 200 new customers since January alone,” MacDonald said at the meeting. “On average, we serve more than 700 people a month. It’s really remarkable – the food bank is open twice a week, (and for a total of) just four hours a week.”

The game between the city’s two Catholic high schools is a fundraiser for the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank; entry for the March showdown was $5 and each year good donations are also accepted.

Thom Racine, the founder and organizer of the game, considered it one of the most interesting matchups between teams in the history of the game. Grade 12 student Wyatt Warner recorded a natural hat trick just under seven minutes into the third period in the 17th annual contest, leading the Panthers to a 5-3 victory.

Hockey is only part of the Bishop Cup story, as the game raised tens of thousands of dollars for St. Vincent de Paul since the first edition in 2007.

Racine said he was pleased with the amount raised in 2024, but believes future editions of the game — and one in particular — could bring in much more.

“With some corporate sponsorship we could grow this game,” Racine said, pointing to a 20th anniversary edition in 2027 that, with additional support and new features, could raise the bar in terms of participation, participation and fundraising.

In 2023, the depleted food bank in the St. Vincent de Paul near the Parish of St. Francis de Sales on Second Street West served 5,732 customers.

“With the (Bishop Cup) game just before Easter, it’s a really big boost for us,” MacDonald said. “That food bank volunteer, I have a front row seat to the struggles experienced by the underprivileged.”

The facility of St. Vincent de Paul is open Tuesday and Friday from 9-11
