Josh Magennis: Exeter City are keen on the Northern Ireland striker after he was released by Wigan

Josh Magennis could be off to Exeter City next season

League One side Exeter City have made a move for Northern Ireland striker Josh Magennis.

The 33-year-old former Aberdeen, Charlton and Hull City striker has been released by Wigan Athletic after more than two years with the League One side.

Magennis, one of Lyon’s kings at Euro 2016, turns 34 in August but told them Belfast Telegraph last month that he had no thoughts of retiring from club or international football.

After making 500 career appearances and 100 goals in the 2023/24 season, he then became a free agent this summer for the first time since starting his professional career with Cardiff City in 2009.

After returning from June’s Northern Ireland friendlies against Spain and Andorra, Magennis has stepped up his club pursuit and could link up with another former Exeter Latic boss, Gary Caldwell.

The interest of the Greeks is understandable, as Magennis has twice lifted the third-tier title. He was crowned League One champions for the first time with Hull in 2021, before emulating the feat with Wigan a year later.

As he considers his next move, the Bangor man said: “I’m not one to be arrogant in thinking I should be playing to a certain standard of football. That will either come with age, lack of form or just opportunity and I’m willing to go anywhere.

“I will stay in football as long as I can and see where we go.”

Magennis has been working on his coaching badges and will be hoping to add to his 79 caps and 11 goals at the highest level.
