Rothesay Classic Birmingham 2024: Harriet Dart knocked out by former Grand Slam champion

Last Briton in Birmingham Harriet Dart insists she will return to battle with Wimbledon on her mind after falling just short of the quarter-finals at the Rothesay Classic Birmingham.

The 27-year-old beat qualifier Moyuka Uchijima in straight sets on Tuesday but lost to the former French Open champion. Barbora Krejcikova in 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16.

Last year’s finalist, Krejcikova, returned for the 42when edition of the tournament and booked a place in the quarterfinals against seventh seed Anastasia Potapova.

Following the retirement of Katie Boulter in the first round and Heather Watson and of Amelia Rajecki In early defeats it was Dart who carried Britain’s hopes in the women’s singles draw, but in the end she fell short against her impressive Czech opponent.

She said: “It was a tough match, I thought Barbora played really well, she put me under a lot of pressure and I have a lot to improve and clean up before Wimbledon.

“I think he started fast in the second set with a break and then it was really hard to come back because he was serving really well and then he had a bit of a swing in my service games.

“Even in the last match, I was in the game, but she played some good shots. I always try to fight and win the match as much as I can, there were some key points today, I didn’t play great so I have to work on that.”

The tennis talent from West Hampstead came into grass fitness from the Lexus Surbiton Trophy and Rothesay Open Nottingham and will next target the Rothesay International Eastbourne.
