Sheffield United beat Sunderland, Burnley deal with Millar

Sheffield United have reached an agreement to sign FC Basel winger Liam Millar, according to Adam Oxley.

Sheffield United were relegated from the Premier League last season.

The Blades finished bottom of the top division and are once again preparing for life in the Championship as a result.

They were joined by Burnley in relegation and both clubs will join Sunderland and Preston North End, who spent last season in the second tier.

Millar, 24, spent last season on loan at Deepdale. He played 35 Championship games for Preston North End and scored five goals while assisting a further five.

The former Liverpool youth player made a permanent move to Switzerland in 2021 but has failed to create any sort of consistency at Basel.

Sheffield United, Burnley, Sunderland and Preston North End have all been linked with a permanent deal this summer. However, it looks like the Blades have won that race and Millar will move to Bramall Lane after the Copa America is complete.

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

A solid signature

Millar impressed during last season at Deepdale and it was no surprise to see initial links suggest a return to the Championship was on the cards this summer.

The versatile forward can play anywhere in the front three, but has been deployed primarily on the left during his career.

He could settle at a new club, as it was evident lately that his future wasn’t really in Basel. Sheffield United will give him the opportunity to do that.

The Canadian international is currently with them at the Copa America. He played in last night’s 2-0 opening defeat against Argentina.

They are all fighting for the same thing

All four second-tier clubs who are interested in Millar are all hoping to achieve the same.

The Blades and Clarets will be looking for an immediate return to the Premier League, with a top six finish the absolute minimum.

While Sunderland will be hoping to build on their dismal bottom half from last season and push for the top six again, while Preston North End will be hoping to do the same.

The loss of Millar will be a blow for them, but the summer window is still only a week away and they have plenty of time to turn to other options and strengthen their squad in other ways.
