“If Leeds Rhinos picked up the phone then…” – Paul Rowley reveals if he would discuss head coaching job

Salford Red Devils head coach Paul Rowley is a man in demand. At the start of the season, he rejected an approach from Hull FC to replace Tony Smith as head coach of the Super League strugglers. He is now being strongly linked with the vacant head coaching role at Leeds Rhinos.

Given Rowley’s track record at Salford, it is almost inevitable that he will be linked with other Super League jobs. He has consistently defied expectations and financial constraints during his time with the club to lead the Red Devils into a competitive position in the table.

This season, the Red Devils sit comfortably in the top six of Super League and look set to feature in the end-of-season play-offs. However, there is a question as to whether Rowley will be with the club given links to the vacant head coaching role at Headingley.

Now, Rowley has said he would be open to a conversation with the Rhinos if they made an approach for him.

Rowley discusses whether he would be open to a conversation with Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos target Paul Rowley

Speaking as a guest on Sky Sports’ coverage of Castelford Tigers v Hull KR, Rowley discussed whether he would be open to an approach from the Rhinos. Rowley stated that he thought it would be best to have a conversation if only the phone rang.

“Like anyone in life, as I said before, and in employment and work, then you have a discussion and it’s certainly a privilege if you have a discussion with a club like, well, previously in Hull and certainly Leeds. Rhinos had to pick up the phone then absolutely.”

Rowley was asked if he thought Ian Blease had tried to engineer the move. Ian Blease was managing director at Salford before moving to Leeds Rhinos as sporting director. Rowley doesn’t think that’s how Blease would work.

“I think he’s designing a move, I don’t think that’s how Ian Blease works, it’s certainly not how I work. I think anything in life, if we were to do something, it would be honest and transparent.

“And so whatever is in the contracts, although I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t even know what’s in them themselves. So because my motivation is fulfilled and I’m fulfilled where I am at Salford, I have no drama about it.

Rowley was not “missing his lips” at the prospect of Smith losing his job

Rowley was then asked if he thought the timing of Leeds’ decision to part with Smith was odd. Rowley was not surprised, however, he believed Smith had been put in a difficult position and explained that it is always sad to see a person lose their job.

“Well, you could clearly see there was a lot of buzz around her and the supporters were there, there was a bit of anxiety and the media was everywhere. So I wouldn’t say I was surprised because obviously I read headlines and see enough to know there’s pressure there.

“But what I will say is for me when I saw and watched the Hull v Leeds game last week I felt very sad I felt very sad for Rohan because he is a human being I felt sad for Tony (Smith, Rohan Smith’s uncle) who was between you two last week.” Rowley said, referring to Tony Smith’s appearance on Sky during the Leeds vs Hull FC match which led to Rohan Smith’s sacking.

“I thought it was a tough position and I think it’s also sad because we’re talking about hiring someone, someone who’s here with family, someone who’s hired someone who loves the sport and the group they represent, so I feel nothing but sadness in them. situations.

“I would never sit there licking my lips at the prospect of taking another guy’s job.”
