Flood warnings issued after heavy rain

Two flood warnings have been issued after heavy rain and thunderstorms swept across parts of West Yorkshire.

People living in the Batley area have been warned that flooding is expected following Tuesday night’s rain, with residents advised to consider moving valuables upstairs or to higher ground.

Kirklees Council posted on X to say Carlinghow Lane was closed at the junction of Ealand Rd and Coal Pit Mews, although the road has since reopened.

The Environment Agency lifted both flood warnings shortly before 21:00 BST, but advised people to avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near watercourses and not to attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

Councilor Tanisha Bramwell, who represents the nearby Dewsbury West ward, said: “The rain was torrential and then started to get heavier with hail and lightning.”

She described the storms as “chaotic and very noisy”.
