Boy taken to hospital after ‘getting sick’ from ‘vaping’ at school

A boy was taken to hospital when he ‘got sick’ after using a vape at school. An ambulance was called to Humphrey Perkins School, in Barrow Upon Soar, near Loughborough, “immediately” after the incident, a spokesman said.

East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) said it received the call at 10.47am on Wednesday (June 19) and a patient was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary. The school’s headteacher praised staff’s “swift actions” and said pupils attended an assembly to “remind them of this very important subject”.

Della Bartram, associate principal of Humphrey Perkins, said an “investigation at the school” is underway. She said: “A pupil became unwell during the school day and an ambulance was called immediately.

“An investigation is ongoing at the school, but early indications have led us to believe the student used a vape. The school community behaved with respect and kindness, providing privacy to the student and the Ambulance Service, and thanks to the quick actions of our staff, the sick student received the care he needed.

“Humphrey Perkins School takes a zero tolerance approach to vaping and vaping and has a robust curriculum of lessons and assemblies, alongside wider pastoral care, to educate our young people about the potential dangers. Following this isolated incident, all students participated in an assembly to remind them about this very important topic.”

An EMAS spokesman said: “We received a call at 10.47am on June 19 at Humphrey Perkins School in Barrow upon Soar. Caller reported a medical emergency. We dispatched an ambulance and a patient was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary. No information on the boy’s condition has been released.
