Escaped inmate, facing charges of attempted murder, is found in LA

A 29-year-old man who escaped from a San Bernardino County jail during an outdoor recreation period was found by Los Angeles police on Monday.

Deshaun M. Stamps of Riverside was taken into custody by the Los Angeles Police Department. Deputies discovered her missing from the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga around 12:19 a.m. Sunday, authorities said.

Stamps has been in custody since Jan. 30, 2023. He has been charged with attempted murder, discharging a police officer’s firearm under special circumstances, obstructing or resisting an officer, vandalism and other charges, according to court records.

Doubts about Stamps’ sanity were raised in court in February 2023. He was sent for mental health diversion in August, according to court records.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has not released further details about where Stamps was, how he got to LA or how he escaped from the West Valley Detention Center, one of California’s largest prisons.
