Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray is expected to move back into the middle of the park next season amid serious interest from top clubs.

Daniel Farke’s pre-season plans are likely already underway ahead of the team’s return to Thorp Arch early next month.

What he does with Archie Gray will be a key talking point, whether it’s a PSR-related sale for the 49ers or someone to act as the pivot for the promotion fee.

Journalist shares Archie Gray’s perspective ahead of pre-season at Leeds

Journalist Graeme Bailey told LeedsUnited.news that there is inevitable interest in Gray away from Elland Road.

However, for now, the teenager’s main focus heading into July is simply to move away from right-back and become a mainstay in midfield.

Bailey said:

“Next, I’m told he wants to play in midfield, will we see that this season at Leeds? It will be interesting. It wouldn’t surprise me if someone tests the water with it this summer, but I don’t expect it to go away.

“But never say never. I don’t think Leeds would let Gray leave for less than £40m, even in a £50m deal. They would want big, big money and rightfully so.”

Gray needs to play midfield next season

There are several reasons why Farke needs to move Gray back into midfield full-time this pre-season ahead of 24/25.

The first is that he’s obviously a midfielder, he’s the opposite of the Trent Alexander-Arnold problem for England, he’s just not a right-back, although he’s an incredibly talented player – play him in midfield where he’s obviously suited.

Not only that, but you also weaken two positions in the process by moving Gray from midfield to right back. You get the best talent in the Championship, not in his best position, nor do you get the best right-back option for the way Farke wants to play.

When you remember that Max Aarons is one of Norwich’s most important players under Farke, it seems frustrating that we don’t have the same type of player for us, while Firpo is showing his quality on the left.

Obviously, all of this only happens if Leeds keep hold of the youngster, but that should happen given the money they would get to get him from us.
