Oklahoma football coach Brent Venables is getting a new six-year contract worth nearly $50 million, as approved by the Oklahoma Board of Regents on Friday.

CBS Sports reported that the package totals $49.65 million, with an average annual value of $8.275 million. The contract will last until the 2029 season.

His original contract, signed when he was hired before the 2022 season, was for six years and $43.5 million.

Over the past two seasons, the Sooners are 16-10 — 6-7 in 2022 and 10-3 last season. They qualified for one bowl game each season, losing both.

Oklahoma is the first head coaching job for Venables, 53.

He began his career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater Kansas State in 1993 before moving on to positions at Oklahoma and Clemson. He won the Broyles Award in 2016 as the nation’s top assistant under Dabo Swinney at Clemson, where he was the assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the time of his departure.

The Sooners are moving from the Big 12 to the Southeastern Conference this fall. They open their season on August 30th against Temple and will enter SEC play on September 21st when they host Tennessee.
