Two people were rescued from the blaze and rushed to hospital after Lambeth caught fire

Two people were rescued from a fire and rushed to hospital after a fire broke out at a block of flats in Lambeth on Wednesday night (June 19). It took 25 firefighters in four fire engines to extinguish the blaze, which started at around 9.45pm.

Firefighters from the London Fire Brigade (LFB) rushed to the scene at a terraced house converted into flats on Gloucester Street in Lambeth. They found that half of the stairwell between the first and second floors was damaged by fire.

Two people were brought to safety by firefighters using escape hoods and taken to hospital. Their condition is not known at this time.

The LFB says fire escape hoods are used to give the public up to 15 minutes of protection against four of the main fire gases (carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride and acrolein). They can be worn by conscious or unconscious persons.

LFB was first called at 21.46 and the incident was over for the firefighters at 23.22. Crews from Lambeth, Chelsea, Clapham and Kensington fire stations attended the scene.

The cause of the fire is now being investigated by the Fire Brigade of London and the Metropolitan Police Service.
